SSHRC’s Research for a Better Life: The Storytellers Challenge

Written by

Congratulations to Annie Briard (MAA Candidate) who was selected as one of 25 top winners of SSHRC’s Research for a Better Life: the Storytellers Challenge.

Annie received $3,000 from SSHRC’s Research for a better Life to help cover travel costs to participate in an exclusive research communications workshop at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, taking place in Victoria, BC, on June 2 and 3. A jury selected the Top 25 from among the entries that included video, audio, infographic and text-based stories.

Annie has been exploring moving image art to situate wonderment and its function within visual perception. Through a series of work ranging from animation, to stereoscopic 3D video, and interactive installation, her research seeks to provide insights and techniques for more powerful and inspiring visual communication.

“It’s extremely motivating to receive this kind of support and encouragement for work towards which I have passionately dedicated the past two years. What is especially exciting about this award is the opportunity to present my research at the 2013 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences this summer. I feel that arts-based research can provide fresh insights and ideas to other fields and disciplines, and having projects such as this one recognized by SSHRC is a clear sign of the important value that artists bring to the table.”

In addition to the workshop, the winners will be taking part in the Storytellers Showcase, a “three-minute thesis-style” presentation. At the Showcase, five final winners will be awarded a trip to Montreal to give a featured presentation at the World Social Sciences Forum in October.

SSHRC launched this first-ever challenge this year, asking postsecondary students from across the country to reveal to Canadians the very best ideas in the social sciences and humanities reseach areas: people, behaviour, human thought and culutre. These ideas will then be used to help us understand and improve the world around us now and for generations to come.

On April 2 Storyteller Tuesdays will reveal three entries each week as they make their way from Newfoundland to Victoria, the host city for Congress 2013.
