Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School (KGMS) and the Health Design Lab have been collaborating for several years. For the 2016/17 school year, KGMS is placing an increasing focus on self-regulation, and would like to create a space for students to use when they feel escalated. This may be a space in the classroom, outside the classroom, or in a separate area completely. For some students this space may be a calm/quiet respite, while other students may use this space to release excess adrenaline. Health Design Lab Research Assistants will explore ways to address these needs, and will develop a high fidelity, functioning prototype(s) for use at KGMS. The design outcome may take the form of furniture, a wall covering, a tent-like structure or some combination of those elements.
