Shaping Scopes + Procedures at the New St. Paul’s Hospital

How can we engage front-line staff from the current hospital in the workflow re-design of Scopes and Procedures at the new hospital?

The New St. Paul’s Hospital presents an opportunity to look at the future of healthcare, in new ways. The construction of a new hospital offers an opportunity to re-consider and re-design how hospital departments are shaped and run. With this project, the New St. Paul’s Redevelopment Team partnered with the Health Design Lab to focus on how the new Scopes and Procedures space would function — knowing there would be a shift from separate, independently run clinics, to a shared floor plan and central waiting room system; while the walls were built and the equipment were purchased, the workflow of front-line staff in the new space was open for exploration and consideration.

The objective of this work was to engage nurses, respiratory therapists, and nurse educators in the decision making and design process, with the goal of sharing a series of recommendations for St. Paul’s Hospital to consider in the development of the 2027 Scopes + Procedures workflow for front-line staff.

Engagement Approach

The first phase involved understanding the care delivery models, skills/training levels of staff, tools and procedures needed, staffing structure, and approach to quality of care in the current hospital. This was done through a series of engagements:

  • Site visits to the current clinics at St Paul’s Hospital.
  • Interviews with patient care managers and leadership.
  • A voicemail or printed diary survey.

The second phase involved two role playing workshops that engaged nurses, respiratory therapist, and nurse educators from different departments in working through care scenarios together, using the future St. Paul’s Hospital Scopes + Procedures floor plan.

Knowledge Sharing

The final output of this work is a set of recommendations for St. Paul’s Hospital to consider in the design of the Scopes and Procedures floor at the new hospital.
