Research Assistant, Living Labs

Theunis Snyman, is an Industrial Designer and Partner at Basic Design. He is currently enrolled in the Master of Design program at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. He has been working on product design, soft goods and furniture design for the last four years. With a passion for reducing waste, his design practice has taken him into the dumpsters of industry in Vancouver finding and creating solutions and new value from materials normally slated for the landfill.

He has been focusing on scaling his positive environmental impact up and outward as an Industrial Designer. In an effort to share knowledge and skills related to upcycling, Theunis launched “Vancouver Trash Lab”, an interdisciplinary cohort-based design collective, focusing on waste materials. He also consulted and designed solutions for the Binners’ Project in Vancouver and received the “People’s Choice Award” in the 2014 L A M P international lighting competition with his entry highlighting design activism. He was an SFU Radius Fellow and is currently a Research Assistant for Living Labs.
